Short Version

Canopy Walking

One reason people come to tropical Latin America is to visit the jungles and cloud forests and experience the diverse array of insect, bird, animal and plant life that appears so exotic to northern eyes. One such place is the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve area in Costa Rica, where the visitor can walk on suspension bridges over small ravines and observe life in the mid to upper canopy, where 90% of all organisms live. One will see orchids, bromeliads, tree ferns and vines on the trunks and branches of the trees, which act as an infrastructure for the plants that must escape the dimness of the forest floor and grow towards the light. And with luck one will spot the multi-hued, long-tailed quetzal perched in the upper reaches of the canopy. After a day in the canopy, one is reluctant to return to the world below.
