Short Version

The Cenotes Of Yucatan

The state of Yucatan, Mexico has over 3,000 cenotes. Cenotes form when acidic groundwater percolates through the surface crust and seeps through cracks in the limestone bedrock. Eventually areas of softer rock are dissolved, sometimes leaving huge underground caverns. Later the thin layer of crust above the cavern collapses, leaving a open hole filled with water. The entire process takes thousands of years. Many cenotes are connected by subterranean rivers. Scuba divers have explored and mapped many of the waterways, but more than 70% remain undiscovered. Skeletal remains of animals and people have been found in these underwater cave systems. They probably fell in and drowned. Nowadays tourists can visit and even swim in some cenotes.
