Long Version

Spray Paint Art

Go to any tourist oriented city in Mexico and take an evening stroll through the plazas or down the beachfront malecones, and among the myriad offerings of food, clothing, crafts and clown acts you will soon notice a category of art that is made from found or discarded objects or cheaply purchased raw materials. It might be a miniature panorama painted on a bent spoon, tiny action figures made of twisted straw, or charming little animals molded from corn paste. But sooner or later you will notice a sizable cluster of people surrounding someone or something bathed in a pool of bright light. You have found the amazing spray paint art.

A beautiful woman wearing a velvet blouse with an embroidered neckline and a long colorful skirt sits cross-legged on the ground. She has a respirator strapped to her face as she leans over her poster board canvas, spraying a fine mist of cheap, off the shelf paint onto her work-in-progress. Not a speck of paint mars her clothes. She is halfway through this spray paint masterpiece that will take her perhaps another 10 minutes to complete. She has already produced at least a dozen today.

The crowd murmurs excitedly as an ethereal scene emerges of a massive moon rising into a starry sky over a craggy snow-clad peak. Next to the artist are finished works that offer fantastic scenes of enormous planets orbiting pyramids or weather carved peaks with stairways spiraling to the top. Gigantic moons loom over oceans or waterfalls framed in palm trees. Dolphins cavort in a weightless underwater world lit by an ultra-bright sun. The paintings have tremendous appeal and are quite inexpensive. The wonder of it is that the artist uses only spray paint, various sized plates to define the orbs, fingers and crumpled newspaper to smear and texture, and a blowtorch to effectuate rapid drying. It is performance art that produces a finished product.

This spray paint technique, with its style of dreamy, surreal planetary landscapes, can be found in any Mexican city with enough tourists or interested citizens. How this genre of art spread throughout the country remains a mystery. But it can be said that, in Mexico, any type of art or craft that sells will soon have many practitioners. As this artist extinguishes her blowtorch, she stands up and pulls off her respirator, and the crowd eagerly surges forward to make their purchases.
