Short Version
The Vizcaino Desert
The Vizcaino Desert encompasses roughly the middle portion of Baja California, with an average annual rainfall of between 2-6 inches. Many of the desert’s 300 cactus species have evolved to quickly gather and store water after a rain, enabling them to survive the hot, dry summer. Some rodents actually hibernate through the hot periods to conserve moisture. Some animals, like the kangaroo rat , obtain all the moisture they need from the seeds they eat. Many birds get the majority of their moisture from the insects and animals they eat. These adaptations have allowed a wide variety of plants and animals to survive in this desert.

El Desierto del Vizcaíno abarca más o menos la porción media de Baja California, y tiene una precipitación anual de entre 2 y 6 pulgadas. Muchas de sus 300 especies de cactos han evolucionado para recoger y guardar el agua rápidamente después de las lluvias, lo que les permite sobrevivir durante el verano caliente y seco. Algunos roedores “hibernan” durante los períodos de calor para conservar la humedad. Algunos animales, como la rata canguro, obtienen toda la humedad que necesitan de las semillas que comen.
