Long Version

Kings Day

It is January 5th, and all the children in Spain are excited about the upcoming Kings Day. In the evening all families stroll on the streets to watch the ¨cabalgata¨. The ¨cabalgata¨ is the equivalent to a parade in which the Wise Kings appear riding horses or camels. There are three kings, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar, and the three of them are escorted by their pages. All the children watch the Wise Kings go by while throwing candy from their camels.  As soon as the ¨cabalgata¨ is over everyone goes home and goes to bed early. Before going to bed the children will place their slipper next to the window in their bedroom, and it will be in the slipper where the Kings will leave candy if the children behaved well through the year, or coal if their behavior was not so good.

In Kings Day morning it is usually the children who wake up first and announce the arrival of the Wise Kings when they see their presents next to their beds. For some of them it will be encouraging to see that the Kings filled their slipper with candy, while for other it will be little intimidating to learn that the Kings found out their behavior was not the best through the year.
