Meet Minnie

Most travelers to Latin American countries do not speak Spanish. They might feel alarmed or slightly fearful when approached by locals, and often wonder about the lives of people around them, but are unable to satisfy their curiosity. All that changes when you learn Spanish. As your comprehension of the language grows, the time comes when you can claim the rewards for your struggles to learn Spanish. We claimed our reward one day when we went to drop off our laundry at Minnie’s house.

In contrast to the trash strewn streets punctuated with piles of smoldering garbage in front of yards completely devoid of vegetation, Minnie’s property was an immaculate canvas of flowering trees and plants, with a modest, but well kept house. In our curiosity we began asking her about her life.

Born and raised in a small fishing village, Minnie grew up in a world where most people made their living harvesting shrimp and several species of white fish. Others grew coconut, banana and mango. People’s daily lives were interwoven as they shared the common concerns of wresting a living from the sea and land. Life was simple and tranquil.

But even as a girl, Minnie was restless. Her sharp, inquiring mind chafed under her father’s belief that education wasn’t important for girls. Burdened with household chores, she never continued past elementary school. In her late teens she left home and went to Mexico City to go to school. But it was hard to support herself and attend classes, so she contented herself with buying books and studying in the evening. She was especially interested in natural history subjects, having been raised surrounded by the natural world.

Eventually she tired of the city and moved back to the family compound. Today she earns her living by cooking for the occasional university group that comes to study the area’s ecology. She also cleans a few houses for the local expatriates and helps her sister with her small laundry business. She still studies natural history when she can afford to buy books. As we talked and she showed us around her garden, she seemed to radiate serenity. We knew we had met a rare person who had found her place on earth. Because we could converse in Spanish we were able to learn some of the life story of this lovely woman with the warm spirit.

Pocos viajeros a América Latina hablan español. Quizás se sientan alarmados o hasta un poco temerosos cuando se les acercan los habitantes del lugar, y podrían preguntarse cómo son las vidas de las personas que los rodean, pero no pueden satisfacer su curiosidad. Todo esto cambia cuando uno aprende español. Al crecer la comprensión del idioma, llega el momento de cobrar la recompensa por el trabajo de aprender español. Nosotros cobramos nuestra recompensa un día que fuimos a dejar el lavado en casa de Minnie.

En contraste con las calles llenas de basura y los montones de desechos frente a patios sin vegetación, la propiedad de Minnie era un lienzo inmaculado de árboles en flor y otras plantas, con una casa modesta pero bien atendida. Curiosos, le preguntamos sobre su vida.

Nacida y criada en un pequeño pueblo pesquero, Minnie creció en un mundo donde la mayoría se ganaba la vida pescando camarones y varias especies de peces blancos. Otros sembraban cocos, plátanos y mangos. Las vidas diarias de las personas se entretejían al compartir las preocupaciones de extraer un modo de vida al mar y a la tierra. La vida era sencilla y pacífica.

Pero aún de niña, Minnie era intranquila. Su mente astuta y curiosa se irritaba ante la creencia de su padre de que la educación no era importante para las niñas. Agobiada por los deberes domésticos, Minnie no pasó de la escuela primaria. A finales de su adolescencia dejó su casa y se fue a Ciudad México para asistir a la escuela. No obstante, le fue difícil mantenerse a la vez que iba a clases, y tuvo que contentarse con comprar libros y estudiar de noche. Habiéndose criado rodeada por la naturaleza, le interesaba particularmente la historia natural.

Eventualmente Minnie se cansó de la ciudad y regresó a su ambiente familiar. Hoy se gana la vida cocinando para los grupos universitarios que ocasionalmente van a estudiar la ecología de la región. Además limpia las casas de algunos residentes extranjeros y ayuda a su hermana en un pequeño negocio de lavandería. Todavía estudia historia natural cuando tiene el dinero para comprar libros. Al conversar con nosotros y mostrarnos su jardín, Minnie parecía rebosar de serenidad. Sabíamos que habíamos conocido a una persona poco común que había encontrado su lugar en la tierra. Poder conversar en español nos permitió conocer la historia de esta encantadora mujer de espíritu acogedor.
