The Alamo

The building known as “the Alamo” may be named for the grove of cottonwood trees in which it stands. It was the chapel of the Mission San Antonio de Valero, founded in 1716. In December 1835 Texans were at war with Mexico, seeking independence. Members of the volunteer army captured the city of San Antonio, and occupied the Alamo. The leader of the Texas independence movement, Sam Houston, advised the volunteers to abandon the Alamo, but they refused. In February 1836 Mexican troops under the command of General Antonio López de Santa Anna began a siege of the Alamo. The Texans numbered 184 men and were commanded by Colonel William B. Travis. Also present were the renowned Davy Crockett and the ailing Colonel James Bowie. The defenders resisted heroically for 13 days, allowing Houston the opportunity to organize the defense of Texas.
