 The Cabrales Cheese Festival

It is in the picturesque village of Arenas de Cabrales, Asturias, located in the heart of Picos de Europa, where the Cabrales Festival takes place at the end of the month of August. In this festival traditions and tasting mix together. The Cabrales cheese, an exquisite product considered one of the best blue cheese in the world, is exhibited in stands along the streets of the village, sold to those who wish to bring a piece of delicacy home, and tasted on the spot on this special day.

The Festival takes place in a unique environment, among leafy vegetation and limestone the attendees will enjoy demonstrations on how Cabrales cheese is made. Exhibits, traditional games, verbenas, and night dances will complete this peculiar festival.

Cabrales cheese was one of the first Asturian cheeses to obtain denomination of origin, in 1982. It is made with a mix of three different milks: cow, sheep and goat. It has a spreading texture and its size may reach 7 kg to 15 cm high, with a fat content of at least 45%.

Those interested in learning more about this tasty and delicious cheese should consider a visit to the Cave of Cabrales Cheese. It is a Museum Cave where you may contract a guided tour for a very affordable fee and see where it is matured. The first part of the cave shows the past of this cheese, such as the environment where the pastors used to live, their cottages, how their lives were, their utensils, and how they used to make the Cabrales cheese.

You will then visit the maturity room, where the Cabrales cheese rests to achieve its optimum stage.

 

 El Festival del Queso Cabrales

 

El pueblo de Arenas de Cabrales, ubicado en el corazón de los Picos de Europa, celebra el último domingo de agosto el Certamen del Queso de Cabrales, fiesta en la que se mezclan las tradiciones populares con la degustación y venta de queso de Cabrales, un exquisito producto considerado como uno de los mejores quesos azules del mundo.

En un entorno único de paisajes de frondosa vegetación y roca caliza, se lleva a  cabo el festival, en el cual los asistentes podrán asistir a las demostraciones de la elaboración artesanal de este lácteo de especial singularidad. Exposiciones, juegos tradicionales, verbenas y una romería completan esta fiesta de especial singularidad.

El queso de Cabrales fue el primero en obtener la Denominación de Orígen, en 1982. Está hecho de una mezclas de leches de vaca, oveja y cabra. Tiene una textura untuosa y puede alcanzar un tamaño de 7 kgs y 15 cm de altura, con un contenido graso de al menos un 45%.

Aquellos interesados en aprender más sobre este delicioso y sabroso queso deberían de considerar una visita a la Cueva del Queso Cabrales. Es una Cueva Museo donde pueden contratar un tour guiado al pagar una pequeña cuota, y pueden ver dónde se madura el queso. La primera parte de la cueva muestra el pasado de este queso, como el ambiente donde vivían los pastores, sus cabañas, cómo eran sus vidas, sus utensilios, y cómo elaboraban el Cabrales entonces. Y al final verán la cámara donde se maduran los quesos para obtener el punto óptimo de un buen Cabrales.
