Giant Domed Tortoise

This giant domed tortoise makes its home in the Galapagos Islands, which are officially known as the Columbus Archipelago. This group of 19 islands is located 600 miles (1,000 km) west of Ecuador and is renowned for its unusual animal life. It was here that Charles Darwin was inspired to develop his theory of evolution. Tortoises like the one in the picture can reach a weight of 300 pounds (140 kg). Of all creatures to be found on Earth, these creatures are believed to have the longest life span. Despite their great weight and slow pace, they travel 30 miles over rough terrain to lay their eggs.

Giant Domed Tortoise
