Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, on September 29, 1547. He studied in Madrid and went on to become a soldier in Italy. In 1571 he was wounded at the battle of Lepanto, losing the use of his left hand. He suffered for five years as a captive of the Turks before returning to Spain in 1580. Cervantes began writing novels and plays and in 1605 he published the first part of his masterpiece, The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha. The book tells the story of an absent-minded knight and his somewhat more sensible squire, Sancho.

En 1571 fue herido en la batalla de Lepanto, perdiendo el movimiento de su mano izquierda, más tarde apodado como el “Manco de Lepanto.” Sufrió cautiverio durante cinco años por los turcos antes de volver a España en 1580. Cervantes comenzó a escribir novelas y obras, y en 1605 él publicó la primera parte de su obra maestra, “el Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha”. El libro cuenta la historia de un caballero distraído y de su escudero algo más sensato, llamado Sancho.
