Sculptures in Leather
For the lover of arts and crafts, there is no greater joy than to stumble upon a nearly forgotten craft medium that is still being practiced at a high technical and artistic level. Such was the case when we discovered the leather wall sculptures of Loa and Rak at their gallery in Mazatlan, Mexico. Working with tanned and dyed skins from cow, pig, goat , and even fish, they sculpt beautifully rendered mask, faces, mermaids and nudes, as well as sailboats and various animals. The pieces, especially the faces, incorporate shawls, hats or hair that is curvy and windblown and create a sense of movement that is visually arresting. This style of leatherwork was brought to the New World from Spain, but these artists are taking it in a direction that is all their own.

Para los aficionados al arte y la artesanía no hay mayor felicidad que toparse con un medio casi olvidado que aún se practica a un alto nivel técnico y artístico. Tal fue el caso cuando descubrimos las esculturas de piel de Loa y Rak en su galería de Mazatlán, México. Trabajando con pieles curtidas y teñidas de vaca, cerdo, cabra y hasta pescado, esculpen hermosas máscaras, rostros, sirenas y desnudos, y también botes de velas y varios animales. Las piezas, especialmente los rostros, incorporan chales, sombreros, o cabellos ondulados y soplados por el viento que crean una sensación de movimiento sorprendente. Este estilo de trabajo en piel fue traído al nuevo mundo de España, pero los artistas de hoy lo están llevando en una dirección muy propia.
